Loot

It had been more than a decade since Nepali movie industry had given its audience a movie to remember. Recently, a debutante director Nischal Basnet came out of nowhere with his surprise blockbuster Loot. It happens so rarely in Nepali film industry that a movie is a wallet bursting success at the box office and it wins quite a few accolades from the movie critics at the same time. Loot was one of those movies which created history and changed the scenario of the Tinseltown for good. The newbie director Basnet was hailed for coming up with a new storyline and the characters that every youngster could relate to. Nepali movie goers had seen enough of larger-than-life characters in the roles that were nowhere near the reality and miles away from the life an everyday person lives.

Loot follows the youngsters who want to make some quick money by hook or by crook. And, this mantra leads them to get on the wrong side of the law. Their plan to be rich overnight takes them to a roller-coaster ride. Do or don’t they succeed is something the audience will have to figure out themselves. It is a simple yet so binding story that keeps the audience nicely guessing the whole time.  Director of photography, Purushottam Pradhan has done a great job. Clarity in the dialog delivery is something to look out for as an audience. Provided the characters and where they come from, use of swear words is justified. The director deserves appreciation for his understanding. Music fails to make a long lasting impact. But, what movie lacks in music, it makes up for in other departments of the movie.

Director Basnet found himself a great cast for the movie which happens to act surprisingly well. . Karma, Saugat Malla, Reecha Sharma, Prateek Raj Neupane, Sushil Raj Pandey and Dayahang Rai are brilliant in the movie. It is safe to say they have done justice to their roles and no one would have done as well as these people have done.  Especially, Saugat Malla, it almost goes without saying,  has again pulled off a landmark performance. He has proven that his being in the Gurukul all these years was not for nothing.

The movie gives tired Nepali audience a breath of fresh air and some rays of hope that Nepali films can be good too. With everything being said and done, excellence on the part of all the cast and crew members puts Loot a cut above the genre rest.

I Am On Air

Personality of the month

Sumeet Bansal

Director of Monalisa Exclusive Textiles
Politeness costs nothing and gains everything. You can feel it on getting a closer look at the Bansal family. The ambience out there was already starting to create a jolly mood which grew more after Sumeet Bansal appeared in front of me with such a politeness that I could see where it was coming from as I already had encountered his other family members.
Taking every moment, every criticism, both negative and positive as an inspiration, 22 year old Sumeet Bansal is on his way to prove himself as a proper businessman. Lovable and affectionate to everybody, looking forward for social works and his birth in Nepal keeps him no far from having a Nepali heart. Grew up here and he knows what life out here means to him. Studied here till 8th grade, later on he continued his study in Bangalore and afterwards Delhi going hit his mind but keeping that aside he stayed in Nepal. And today moving on with experience in business, he is doing his Masters in Business Economics.
As a business career, Sumeet started off with a new business by his family Monalisa Exclusive Textiles and gave experience a go: looked after marketing promotions, advertisements in the beginning. Today he stands as the Director of Monalisa Exclusive Textiles which has four store outlets till date. In the mean time, Spectrum Merchandise and Jasmine Spa were opened as another family business almost a year after the opening of Monalisa Exclusive Textiles. It has been around 4 years that he has been in business world for: learning business, doing business. But, officially it would be after he joined his Masters degree. Responsibility has grown more on Sumeet with distribution of F&N Ice Tea and 100 Plus that he is looking after.
Your inspiration
I have always been inspired by people around me; whether they love or they hate me. People who take me wrong, I want to prove right of myself in front of them. They inspire me that way. And the ones who love me, I want to prove them right again and again. So basically, people and things around me inspire a lot.
Definitely, from my family as well I learned a lot. From my father I learned how to keep people happy. He is one of my greatest inspirations.
Any memory that is still fresh in your memory?
There is a lot of them. My parents’ 25th anniversary was one of them. The day I completed the   magazine Royal Optima and the moment of doing theatrical acts, they are always very memorable.
Theatre! What makes you enter this world?
Theatre is a hard thing to do and knowing I can do encourages me to do it. The best part is I have always been in the leading villain character: antagonist and I have always got best character awards. Theatre takes lots of effort: months of practice and you finally give a show. That slot of like an hour and half, audience watching you, you giving your best performance, it feels great. Recently, I did a play in Kathmandu as well in “When the Sky is Purple”. Whenever I am on stage I feel like myself. I want to play in Gurukul; take theatre as a serious passion.  But then that is my hobby. Whenever I get time, I would love to do theatre.
How often do you go on a family vacation?
Well, before I went to Bangalore, we used to go on a family vacations once a year. For 6 years I was outside. So that time we did not get a chance for a family vacation and after getting back, there is this responsibility: If my dad is out, I stay here and support my grandfather. So now, family vacation is like next to impossible. But once a while we go for family dinners and my father makes sure it is perfect. We take no risk and so head towards well tested restaurants mostly.
Your interest/hobbies
Doing theatre, I am like a die-hard fan. When on stage I feel like the world is mine. Besides theatre, I like to listen to music, including classical Nepali and classical Hindi. And my biggest trade buster is my trade mill every morning. You can add partying, playing cricket and going for movies to the list too.
What are you comfortable wearing the most as you are just 22 yet are a businessman?
It depends on the time. When I have to meet people, I am more comfortable wearing suits because that gives me confidence. When I stand in front of ten people and I am dressed well, then obviously it boosts my confidence. I can make my presence felt when I am well dressed. Since, I do not only hang out with friends, but I meet people like businessman as well, I have to dress accordingly. Otherwise, I am comfortable with every kind of clothing.
How much are you in love with gadgets?
I use lots of gadgets but I am always little scared of it because there are so many technology in it. I try to update with everything. I have a MacBook Pro for past 5-6 years. I am a big Apple fan. So the ‘i’ follows- iPad, iPod. As per mobile, I love Blackberry. Watches can be kept under gadgets. In fact, watch is the biggest gadget of mine.
What is fashion to you?
Fashion is something that represents you basically. Being fashionable means being confident, stylish and trendy: So whatever suits you, whatever you can carry off well is fashion for me. It is not like copying someone else or fashion that is right now. If a person cannot carry yellow color off properly, what is the use of wearing a yellow color? If he feels that he is looking funny in front of others there is no use of wearing that.
Your experience so far
Business experience is pretty good. I got to learn a lot of things. Learnt how to keep good relation with everybody in work: because it is the best and the hardest thing to do. In fact, I am still learning.  Moreover, in Nepal you do not have to stick with one thing. You can do lots of things at the same time. So you get to learn a lot from other fields as well.
Sumeet Bansal in few words
Sweet, warm, friendly, confident, down to earth and all-rounder: boy with a golden heart.
Believes in:
Taking an exposure all over the world, make people outside as well know that that guy is from Nepal and he is good enough to represent his country.
Charity begins at home, but should not end there.
What he feels about Nepal?
Everything I have is given by this country. I was born and brought up here. I cannot imagine why not Nepal. Yeah, I studied in India; I go to China for my business purpose. But when I come back to Nepal, it feels peaceful. The weather is so nice, there are so many restaurants; you are always in vacation and you work because you just have to work. I love Nepal. This is my own place.

Artish Biography

Nima-rumba

Nima Rumba
Singer/Musician
We have been listening to his mesmerizing voice for two long decades. His smile, music, voice, lyrics and the way he moves when he sings is just awesome. Seeing him for the first time in his first music video, I too had drowned in the sea of his charisma. So, being his one of the die-hard fans, I had never ever imagined I would be interviewing him for the world to know him better and when I was asked to do so, it was like my dream come true.
He is in the industry since 1990, has given us number of hits, is one of the evergreen artists of our country and through this he is one among few to give a new shape to the Nepali music industry. “Be true to yourself, be sincere to your work, be loyal and humble to yourself, and mainly keep your eyes on the stars but keep your feet on the ground”, this is what he believes is his mantra for making him what he is today and here I am talking about none other than our own versatile singer “Nima Rumba”
Back then, I remember how much I used to love to dance and through it the interest in music grew in me. While doing high school, I realized I loved music. Then I started taking music as a passion, a hobby and while taking the music further, it came to be a profession. So, here I am moving ahead with music and only music”, shared Nima when I asked him about how his involvement in the industry came about.
Started with a band in the beginning of his musical career, Nima said, In past, there was a trend to form a band, to participate in live shows. So, I too used to participate with my brother’s friend’s band. My school was at Swoyambhu, Bijeswori and so was the band. After high school, I joined them and it was there where I learnt to sing and play guitar. Things were going on but one day there came a turning point in my life. So, I left my study and chose music to move forward with”.
Nima’s dad is a Thanka artist. He learnt painting from him and believes that painting is in his blood. He thinks that if he would not have been in music field then he too would be a thanka artist like his father. And, if not that,  he, surely, would be working somewhere abroad.
A nature lover at heart, Nima Rumba loves to visit within the country, especially around the rural areas which he wants to explore more about. Manang and Mustang are a few places he has visited alone and with his family. He has been to Pokhara, Chitwan, Kavre, Nagarkot, Tatopani, Dhulikhel .
About his most memorable moment he takes the competition in which his 2nd band Peace had came in 2nd on the RARA Nepali music competition as one and as for another one he believes it was when he became father.
Just 5-6 months back, Nima released his 8th album. Every song he has released is special for him but among them the song “Happy birthday Samuel” from his album Lolita is close to his heart because he had missed his boy’s birthday and in order to make up for it, he wrote this song as a birthday gift for him.

When I asked him whether an artist could move on only by depending on music? He opined that, “Nepali music industry is on the verge of developing as compared to the past.  We have been seeing loads of changes too. In the past, there were only one radio and a TV station. If one song of an artist was played through it then it was like reaching the moon. Pay was low but now there are 300 plus FM stations and dozens of TV stations.  Nationally and internationally concerts are being held. So comparing to the past everything has improved and as Artists of that time survived without having opportunities like today then why can we not? I believe it all depends on one’s way of handling the things that life brings. It is true it is hard to move on in life with music only but if you can adjust the things or can react to the things calmly and seriously then surely anyone can”.
Nepali artists like Aruna Lama, Narayan Gopal, Arun Thapa, Dip Shrestha, Phattey Maan, Harish Mathema are some and internationally it is Michael Jackson, Bob Marely and JJ Kell who inspire Nima to be in music. He loves to tune FM while driving  and loves to watch Nepali TV channels, mostly News station.
About his view on the upcoming new artist, Nima shared “it is really a good thing for the industry that many young and talented artists are being born and are adding many hits to the chart list and it is just awesome. Everyone wants to be famous and popular but the competition is tough and to make it through is a real deal. Back then, I too was a new artist and now I am here, I can understand that struggling phase, that hard time, their feelings”.
He further added, “Time brings both positive along with the negative changes. There was a different kind of struggle back then. Before, there was only one TV station, only one radio to promote the artist. Or there was no media at all. Only platform we had was local stage programs and school, college programs. To play the song on TV and radio at that time was like one reaching moon. But now it is different and things have gotten better. Now, with development in media, anyone’s song is being played, everyone is appearing on TV and sometime it feels like this new platform is being misused. So. what lacks in today’s artist is struggle as a musician.
About the Nepali music industry Nima shared, “Showbiz industry is the richest industry in the worldwide but here in our country it is not like that. We cannot compare the recording level to others; our part is far behind from others. Market is small, there is no money here so may be due to that also the entertainment industry is lagging behind. Moreover, during the monarchy system, artists were taken only as an entertainment material, were taken for the personnel use, they were not given any value, respect and importance so may be due to these factors our talents have yet to come out from behind the curtain.
No one can reach  the depth of the music. Music is about continuity in exploring, creating and never stopping. Here I am in the industry for 20 years but I still am learning, providing the world what I am producing. The thirst never ends here, you create something and next time you want to do much better. There is no stopping in the field as diverse and creative as music.Stopping in the music means the death of the music. I believe I have a long way to go so keeping the hindrances behind that I get on my way I am moving ahead!!!”
Few things about Nima rumba

  • Besides music Nima loves to travel new places.
  • He adores to try new things, place, food, and new fashion trend.
  • Loves to watch movie; can spend whole day just  watching TV.

Shout out to the Folio readers from Nima Rumba: Namaste to all of you. How much you listen to foreign artists or watch TV channels, you should also give priority to Nepali artists and talents. Our industry has always been dominated by our neighboring country and its, culture. I would like to ask Folio readers to be little more respectful to our own talents too. I would not say stop listening to them but still love and support our own artists, industry, players and all. Happy New Year to everyone, enjoy!!!
